The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has extended its ₦66-per-litre petrol discount until October 31, 2026, offering motorists additional relief amid rising fuel prices linked to the Middle East conflict.
The discount, first introduced on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, will now run throughout the month at NNPC Retail stations nationwide.
The extension aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to ease the impact of elevated global crude oil prices on households, businesses and the wider economy.
In a statement on Friday, Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh said the move followed comments by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8.
Oyedele had announced that NNPC would offer discounted petrol at its stations for 30 days, with priority for public transport operators, while stressing it was not a return to subsidy.
NNPC clarified that the ₦66 sales discount is a temporary customer relief initiative. “This discount is a customer relief initiative and does not represent the reintroduction of petroleum subsidy,” the company stated.
It emphasised that the measure applies only to NNPC Retail outlets and does not create a uniform national pump price or alter the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.
The petrol subsidy was removed by the Federal Government in May 2023.The company noted that higher petrol prices affect daily life, from commuting costs to business expenses, and said the discount aims to provide direct support during a period of global market uncertainty.
NNPC reaffirmed its commitment to reliable product supply and commercially responsible operations. It urged the public to disregard any suggestion that the extension restores the old subsidy regime, describing it instead as limited customer support.
“Our priority is to provide practical support while maintaining commercially responsible operations. We will continue to explain the scope and duration of our customer initiatives clearly, so Nigerians can make informed purchasing decisions,” the statement added.
