Nigeria’s Voter Register Hits 103 Million — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday announced that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters has risen to over 103 million after the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and the final biometric cleanup.

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan disclosed this in his keynote address at a one-day strategic workshop for editors organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors in collaboration with the commission in Abuja.

He said the three phases of the CVR produced 10,772,421 new registrations, which were then subjected to verification by the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

“Following the conclusion of our three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which captured over 10.6 million new applicants, and the completion of the public display of the Preliminary Register for claims and objections, our Voter Register Department has completed the final Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) cleanup. Nigeria’s National Register of Voters is now over 103 million,” Amupitan declared.

The previous register stood at about 93.47 million ahead of the 2023 elections. INEC had earlier projected that the figure would cross the 100 million mark once the CVR and cleanup processes were finalised.

Amupitan also announced that nationwide collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) will begin on Friday, October 9, 2026.

He said the commission has completed the processing and distribution of Phase 1 PVCs to all local government collection centres and urged the media to help inform citizens about collection locations.

In addition, the chairman revealed that INEC has acquired 57,000 new Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices.

These have undergone software hardening, battery optimisation and biometric calibration to prevent accreditation bypass and eliminate manual manipulation ahead of the 2027 elections.

He further stated that the commission is taking a firm stance against vote-buying through a strengthened coalition with the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

Joint financial monitoring teams will track illegal campaign spending and conduct undercover surveillance at polling units.

The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.
