Nigeria’s Greatest Asset Is Its Youth, Not Natural Resources, Says Barau

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has described Nigeria’s youth population as the nation’s most valuable asset, stressing that investment in education and skills development is crucial for sustainable national growth.

Barau made the remark on Thursday while receiving the Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Science and Technology (FUST), Kabo, Chief Mrs Grace Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, and other council members during a courtesy visit to the National Assembly in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President emphasised the importance of equipping young Nigerians with quality education and practical skills to enable them contribute meaningfully to the country's development.

“Our greatest asset as a nation is our human resources, particularly the youth. We must ensure they have access to quality education and the necessary skills to drive national development,” Barau said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting institutions that provide educational opportunities and capacity-building programmes for young Nigerians.

Barau also commended the management, staff and Governing Council of FUST Kabo for securing accreditation for 20 academic programmes, including medical courses, ahead of the university’s inaugural academic session.

“I am delighted with the remarkable progress recorded by the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo, within such a short period. I commend the Governing Council, management and staff for this achievement and urge them to sustain the momentum by maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence,” he stated.

The Deputy Senate President further expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for signing the legislation that transformed the institution from a federal polytechnic into a university.

Earlier, Pro-Chancellor Grace Laoye-Tomori described the accreditation of the 20 programmes as a significant milestone that would enable the institution to begin academic activities on a strong footing.

She noted that the achievement reflects the university’s readiness to deliver quality education and contribute to the development of science, technology and innovation in Nigeria.
