The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the conduct of police officers during the 2027 general elections will reflect professionalism and integrity, making citizens proud of the force.
Speaking after the launch of The Origin of Women in Nigeria Police Force, authored by 96-year-old Dame Stella Okuyiga, one of the first female officers in the service, Disu emphasized that the police are committed to building on lessons from past elections.
“We have now brought all these experiences together, where we did well and where we did not do well, so that we can perform better in this big election that everybody is looking up to,” he said.
“I give you my word. Nigeria Police will do so well, and we will make Nigerians proud.”Disu revealed that a national conference of police commissioners and senior officers had been held to strategize for the polls, stressing that the force is determined to uphold credibility and fairness.
On Okuyiga’s book, the IGP praised her pioneering role as one of the first 20 women to join the Nigerian Police in 1955.
He noted that the publication would serve as a valuable resource for training institutions and future generations of female officers.
Okuyiga, visibly delighted, described the launch as a milestone in her life, saying the book would ensure her legacy endures. “This book will be in libraries all over the world, and they’ll be reading it. So I’m so happy that I will continue to live forever,” she said.
The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, represented by Secretary to the State Government Dr. Dagogo Wokama, unveiled the book with a ₦20 million donation.
