The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has strongly condemned the reported arrest of youths in Borno State for wearing T-shirts with political messages, warning that Nigeria must not slide into a situation where citizens are detained simply for expressing their political views.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, made the position known in a statement.
He stressed that the country should never reach a point where people are held like hostages and only freed when certain political conditions are satisfied.
“Nigeria must not become a country where citizens are treated as hostages and released only when political conditions are met,” the statement said.
The remarks came amid growing efforts by opposition coalition leaders to expand their ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections. PRP National Chairman Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed joined other coalition figures on a visit to former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, at his residence.
The PRP said the coalition would take up the Borno arrests, describing them as a matter of serious concern regarding the treatment of citizens over political expression.
The meeting with Atiku was described as a source of “tremendous inspiration” for the delegation.
According to the party, coalition leaders and others interested in joining recognised the urgent need to broaden and strengthen the alliance.
Their ongoing engagements aim to build a wider political platform capable of mounting a strong challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
