NAFDAC Shuts Down ₦500m Fake Alcohol Factory in Aba

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a suspected counterfeit alcohol production facility in Aba, Abia State, valued at over ₦500 million.

According to the agency, the illegal factory located at No. 25 Omenazu Street was discovered following credible intelligence.

Operatives found the premises operating under unhygienic conditions, while the suspected operator fled, abandoning a vehicle loaded with counterfeit packaging materials for brands such as Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky and Scottish Hills Whisky.

NAFDAC reported that the raid uncovered drums containing about 200 litres of liquid, ethanol-filled containers, tree bark immersed in ethanol, bottle caps, sealing machines, dirty sieves, and other equipment allegedly used in the production process.

“The estimated value of the equipment, materials and facility components is over ₦500 million. The Agency urges members of the public to provide credible information on suspected illegal manufacturing activities to the NAFDAC Call Centre on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or email reforms@nafdac.gov.ng,” the agency stated.

This latest operation comes after NAFDAC seized counterfeit alcoholic drinks worth ₦2bn at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex on October 13, and destroyed fake products valued at ₦2.6bn in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and warned consumers against the dangers of consuming unregulated and counterfeit beverages.
