A helicopter crashed on Monday, October 5, 2026, in Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, with several people feared dead.
The aircraft went down in a swampy area opposite a naval facility (Forward Operating Base) in the coastal, oil-producing community, sparking panic among residents who rushed toward the scene.
The helicopter was extensively damaged by fire and reportedly burnt to rubble. Military gear was recovered at the site, leading some reports to describe it as a suspected military helicopter.
The Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Maurice Oripelaye, confirmed the crash. He said the exact number of people on board could not yet be determined because of the fire damage.
The identity of the helicopter, its operator, origin, destination, and the precise number of occupants remained unclear in early reports. No official confirmation of fatalities or survivors had been issued at the time most accounts were filed.
Emergency responders, security agencies (including the Nigerian Navy), and police were mobilising for search-and-rescue and to secure the site.
Ondo State Police Command spokesperson DSP Abayomi Jimoh initially said he was unaware of the incident but later confirmed it had occurred in the Igbokoda axis, noting that full details were still emerging.
He urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.Igbokoda is a major commercial hub in the riverine Ilaje area, where helicopters are commonly used for oil and gas logistics.
The cause of the crash had not been established. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau is expected to investigate.
Further updates on casualties and circumstances are anticipated as authorities assess the wreckage.
