Lanre Issa-Onilu, director-general of the National
Orientation Agency (NOA), has urged Nigerians to adjust their lifestyles and
live within their means amid economic challenges.
Issa-Onilu, who was speaking on Channels Television’s
‘Political Paradigm’, said Nigerians should adopt responsible habits, including
managing their electricity consumption and lifestyles.
He urged Nigerians to assess their spending habits and make
necessary adjustments to align with their financial capacity.
“You must have travelled abroad. You don’t go to anybody’s
house as we speak, who has gone to work and you see the AC working or you see
the light on,” he said.
“Go to many homes in this country, we do that. So, we also
must manage our lifestyle, it’s part of our responsibility.
“People must now understand that you have a responsibility
to look at yourself and say, how do I adjust? Adjust is not suffering, adjust
is living within your means.”
His comments come amid criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s
economic policies.
Opposition parties have urged Nigerians not to re-elect
Tinubu, who is contesting on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform in
the 2027 presidential election.
Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, minister of women affairs and social
development, had said the Tinubu administration recognises the sacrifices
Nigerians are making amid the pervasive economic hardship.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim spoke at a press conference on Tuesday in
Abuja ahead of the unveiling of a book examining Tinubu’s reform agenda, titled
‘The Courage to Reform: Architecture of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR —
Beyond 2027: Statecraft, Vision for National Renewal’.
The book, promoted by the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement,
showcases the administration’s policies and achievements over the past three
years and is scheduled for launch on November 5.
The minister said Tinubu’s reforms were necessary to address
the perennial economic challenges.
“Those decisions came at a cost and Nigerian families have
felt it. No one in this government takes that sacrifice lightly, least of all
Mr President,” he said.
“But I say to you today, with conviction, that the sacrifice
is not in vain. The results are beginning to show.”
