The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has approved the design for a proposed monorail linking the Ikeja Railway Station to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The project aims to give commuters and air travellers a reliable rail alternative to road transport by connecting the Lagos Red Line terminus in Ikeja directly to the airport.
Keyamo announced the approval on Tuesday after reviewing the plans with the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and engineering teams from both the ministry and FAAN.
According to the minister, the monorail will feature five stations: Ikeja Station, Domestic Airport Station, Beesam Station, Toll Gate Station, and MMI Airport Station.
It will terminate at the new Terminal 1, which is currently under reconstruction.
“We appraised and approved the design of the Lagos Airport monorail that would take commuters and the flying public from the Ikeja Railway Station (where the Lagos Redline terminates) to the terminal point at the new Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1 that is now being reconstructed,” Keyamo said.
He described the monorail as an integral part of the broader reconstruction of MMIA, Nigeria’s major aviation gateway.
