Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan are meeting Iranian counterparts in Tehran on Monday for discussions on regional security, according to Iranian and Saudi authorities.
Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin would take part. Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei is also expected to join the talks.
Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Dr Rayed Krimly confirmed that the kingdom’s defence minister was leading a delegation to Tehran.
He described the visit as part of ongoing efforts by countries under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement to promote de-escalation, dialogue and diplomatic solutions. The initiative supports mediation work by Qatar and Pakistan.
The meeting comes after eight months of conflict in the Middle East. Fighting began in late February when the United States and Israel carried out surprise attacks on Iran during nuclear negotiations.
An April ceasefire ended the most intense phase of bombardment, but the sides have continued to contest control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.
Iran asserts authority over the waterway and has targeted unauthorised vessels, while the United States maintains a naval counter-blockade on Iranian ports.
Diplomatic efforts remain stalled following the collapse of a June agreement that had outlined a path to a lasting settlement.
The conflict has also expanded regionally, including renewed fighting between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen.
The talks are being framed by participants as a step toward greater regional coordination on security amid ongoing tensions and external threats.
