INEC faces backlash over ‘AI-generated photos, names of deceased persons’ in voters’ register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing criticism over irregularities in the voters’ register after citizens flagged duplicate entries and suspected AI-generated photographs.

The electoral umpire published an updated register of voters on Monday, following calls for broader public access ahead of the 2027 general election.

Hours later, citizens began raising concerns about discrepancies in the data.

Screenshots shared by social media users showed entries from a polling unit in Etsako West LGA of Edo state with photographs suspected to have been generated by AI.

There were also allegations of duplicate entries on the register.

One social media user said while registering for a permanent voter card, the system flagged a duplicate record bearing the same name, date of birth, state and national identification number (NIN) as theirs, but with a different photograph, gender and LGA.

An INEC official allegedly attributed the duplicate record to coincidence, despite both entries bearing the same NIN.

Some citizens were also said to have identified their deceased family members on the voters’ register.

INEC has yet to respond to the concerns.

Here are more reactions.
