Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has unveiled a proposal to increase gratuity and pension benefits for retired police officers by 200 per cent, as part of ongoing reforms in the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking in Abuja, Disu said the plan is currently before a Presidential Committee tasked with addressing police welfare and pension challenges.
The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant-General, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, the Budget Office, and the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
Under the proposed framework, retired officers would receive pension benefits tied to their last salaries, alongside enhanced gratuity. Disu explained that the initiative aims to resolve longstanding pension liabilities, improve retirement benefits, and streamline pension administration.
He noted that the package would also cover officers who retired before the reforms take effect, ensuring their benefits are reviewed in line with the new terms.
The proposal is expected to address recurring protests by serving officers seeking to exit the Contributory Pension Scheme, a contentious issue within the force.
Disu credited President Bola Tinubu’s intervention for clearing pension backlogs and introducing increments that have already doubled payments for some beneficiaries. He stressed that timely access to benefits is vital for retirees struggling with rising living costs and medical expenses.
“The committee is expected to recommend measures on outstanding liabilities, funding arrangements and benefit administration,” Disu said, adding that the proposal remains subject to government approval and implementation guidelines.
