Gunmen killed a serving Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer and abducted a local businessman in Pushit community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack happened around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew recently imposed in parts of the area after repeated incidents of violence.
According to community member Lawrence Tabitha, the deceased—a Deputy Superintendent of the NSCDC—was shot near his residence while riding his motorcycle. Tabitha said the gunmen had earlier seized a businessman who trades in fuel, cement and fertiliser.
He explained that the attackers opened fire on the officer after the headlight of his motorcycle revealed their movement as they fled the area with their captive.Tabitha noted that the incident has deepened fears about the security situation in Pushit and neighbouring communities, even with measures already in place to curb attacks.
He called on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to urgently reinforce security in Pushit District and secure the safe release of the abducted businessman.
Residents remain particularly concerned about recurrent attacks in communities within the district, including Vodni, Sabon Gari and Nchiya. Tabitha urged people to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements to the authorities.
Attempts to obtain confirmation from security operatives at the time of filing this report were unsuccessful.
