Four Killed, Six Injured as Container Truck Crushes Bus on Lagos Bridge

Four passengers lost their lives and six others sustained injuries when a container-laden truck overturned onto a commercial bus on Berger Bridge along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu. According to the agency, the accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when an articulated truck carrying a 20-foot container collided with a Toyota Hiace passenger bus.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck was climbing the bridge at excessive speed when the crash occurred. In an effort to avoid a collision, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the truck to overturn onto the bus.

“The impact was severe and tragically resulted in the loss of four adult males who were confirmed dead at the scene, while six other adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Emergency responders from LASEMA, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations, administer first aid and evacuate the injured victims to Epe General Hospital for treatment. The agency also secured a private crane to recover the overturned truck and container, while the bodies of the deceased were removed from the wreckage.

Recovery efforts were still ongoing as authorities implemented traffic control measures to ensure safety and minimise disruption along the route. The Lagos State Government expressed sympathy to the families of those who died and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

In a separate incident on Wednesday morning, LASEMA responded to a truck crash near Vetland School along Old Abeokuta Road in Agege. The truck reportedly rammed into a solar-powered streetlight pole, mounted the road median and obstructed traffic. No casualty was recorded, while preliminary findings attributed the crash to reckless driving.

The agency also attended to another accident at Lanre Bus Stop on the LASU-Igando Road involving a DAF truck and a Toyota Corolla. The collision was linked to traffic congestion caused by a broken-down vehicle and the truck driver's decision to drive against traffic. One person sustained a minor head injury, while no death was recorded.

LASEMA urged motorists to obey speed limits, avoid dangerous driving practices and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys. The agency also encouraged residents to report emergencies through the state’s toll-free emergency lines, 767 and 112.
