South African police are investigating the killing of a foreign national who was beaten to death by a crowd of about 50 people in Durban on Thursday.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal said the victim, believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, was declared dead at the scene in the city’s central business district.
According to police, a group of people was marching along Dr Pixley kaSeme Street towards Maud Mfusi Street when two men broke away from the procession and approached a man standing on the roadside.
The victim was then assaulted by approximately 50 people.Police have not disclosed the victim’s nationality and said the motive for the attack remains unknown.
Officers are pursuing several leads and using available investigative resources to identify and arrest possible suspects.
Authorities urged the public not to circulate unverified information about the incident while the investigation continues.
The killing comes amid months of anti-migrant protests across South Africa. Earlier this month, demonstrations in Durban and Johannesburg’s Soweto township turned violent, with foreign-owned businesses looted and vehicles set alight.
