Five Killed in Crash Involving Niger Governor’s Convoy

Five people, including four male students and a young woman, have died in a road accident involving a vehicle attached to the convoy of Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, along the Minna-Bida Road.

The fatal crash occurred on Monday at Gidan Mangoro community in Minna following a collision between a speeding Hilux van in the governor’s convoy and a Peugeot 206 car.

The female victim, identified as Nafisa, was reportedly driving the Peugeot. She died at the scene alongside four male passengers believed to be postgraduate students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna. Nafisa was said to be a programme manager at Labspace, a non-governmental organisation, and founder of Wosh Mart Service Ltd.

A resident of Gidan Mangoro, Abdullahi Musa, said the accident happened around 11:35 a.m. as the governor’s convoy was returning from Bida after a condolence visit to the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar.

According to Musa, the crash occurred when the Hilux allegedly attempted a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre and collided head-on with the oncoming car.

“The occupants of the private vehicle died instantly, while those in the government Hilux sustained serious injuries. The driver of the Hilux also died at the scene,” he said.

A medical worker at the Minna General Hospital, where the victims were taken, said three people died immediately after the collision, while two others later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Some of the injured were subsequently referred to the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Specialist Hospital for further treatment.

Sources also disclosed that a former local government chairman who was travelling in the Hilux survived the crash but suffered fractures to both legs.

Confirming the incident, Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Aishat Sa’adu, said FRSC personnel arrived after the victims had been evacuated to hospital.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Superintendent Wasiu Abiodun, also confirmed the accident, noting that investigations were underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“The accident occurred this morning and we are investigating it,” Abiodun said.
