Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.) has assured that Nigerian troops who lost their lives in ECOMOG peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone will not be forgotten.
Musa gave the pledge while receiving a delegation of ECOMOG veterans led by Maj. Gen. Ohifeme Ejimai (retd.) at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja.
The details were contained in a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Leah Katung-Babatunde.
The minister said the Federal Government remains committed to preserving the legacy and sacrifices of Nigerian personnel who served in the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG).
He acknowledged the substantial human and financial resources Nigeria contributed to the operations, stressing that those who paid the ultimate price, especially in Liberia and Sierra Leone, would always be remembered.
Musa further assured the veterans that efforts to complete the documentation of remaining records, casualty lists, and historical assets linked to ECOMOG would be finalised so the force’s contributions can be properly preserved for future generations.
Earlier, Ejimai briefed the minister on the veterans’ ongoing activities and the welfare of surviving Nigerian personnel who served under ECOMOG.
He noted that the veterans are still ready to contribute to national development and security.
The retired general also called on the ministry to close gaps in ECOMOG’s historical records and consider establishing a dedicated remembrance day to honour the hundreds of Nigerian troops who died during the missions.
ECOMOG was set up by ECOWAS in 1990 as a regional peacekeeping and peace-enforcement force. With significant Nigerian leadership and participation, it helped restore order and stability in Liberia and Sierra Leone during periods of intense conflict.
