FG Moves to Revive Aba Textile Industry

The Federal Government has announced plans to revive Aba’s textile and garment industry, pledging interventions in infrastructure and access to finance to boost the sector.

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Industry, Trade and Investment, John Uwajimogu, disclosed this during a meeting with Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.

He noted Aba’s strong industrial base and said the government was exploring ways to ease constraints faced by businesses in the cluster.

“We see Aba’s industrial capacity, especially in textiles and garments, and are working on how to support businesses by addressing challenges around infrastructure and finance,” Uwajimogu said.

The delegation also included Cornelius Adebayo, Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), who sought land for a Renewed Hope Mega Farm Estate in Abia.

He said the project would provide infrastructure, inputs, and market access to farmers, boosting production and creating jobs.Governor Otti welcomed the initiative, stressing that Abia’s fertile land could support crops such as cassava, yam, cocoyam, oil palm, and cashew.

He recalled the success of past farm settlements and enterprises like the defunct Star Paper Mill, urging deliberate investment in local production to reduce dependence on food imports.Otti directed the Commissioners for Agriculture and Lands to identify suitable sites for the farm estate and strengthen NALDA’s operations in the state.

The meeting was attended by members of the State Executive Council, signaling Abia’s readiness to collaborate with federal agencies to unlock its industrial and agricultural potential.
