The Federal Government has unveiled a new initiative to ease transportation costs on university campuses by subsidising the conversion of vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and deploying CNG-powered buses across selected institutions.
Under the first phase of the programme, 100 buses will be introduced in 20 public universities, with fares capped at ₦150 per trip.
Mr. Tosin Coker, a member of the Presidential Initiative on CNG Electric Vehicles (PCNGI-EV), announced the scheme during a press briefing at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
He explained that the project, known as SPROUT’s Campus Transport Scheme, was designed to reduce transport expenses for students, lecturers, and other university workers.
“We know that an average household spends over 20 per cent of their income on transportation. We are determined to reduce that,” Coker said.
He added that lecturers and staff could convert their vehicles to CNG at government-subsidised centres, with flexible payment options.
Sustainable ModelChief Executive Officer of FEMADEC Group, Mr. Fola Akinnola, whose company is partnering with the government, said the scheme leverages locally available gas resources to provide affordable transport without continuous reliance on subsidies.
He noted that the model is already operational at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), the University of Abuja, and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
“UNILAG is not just a pilot — it is proof that this model travels. The same dual-track structure now running at FUTO, Abuja and Ife is live here today,” Akinnola said.
University EndorsementDeputy Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Muyiwa Falaiye, representing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, commended the initiative, stressing that CNG conversion would significantly cut transportation costs for the university community.
