The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that the Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered and arrested individuals behind a plot targeting its ad hoc staff, particularly National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan SAN, disclosed this during the South-East Zonal Interactive Meeting with staff in Enugu, noting that the suspects will be prosecuted soon.
He explained that the Commission had identified potential risks to its temporary staff and worked with security agencies to neutralize the threat.
Amupitan announced plans to convene a Security Conference to address broader election security concerns.
He highlighted that INEC’s partnership with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) has been strengthened, with intelligence-driven tools now guiding risk management.
The INEC boss also warned that misinformation, disinformation, and fake news remain major challenges.
“A single malicious fake news post, an unverified rumour, or a deepfake video can travel across millions of screens in seconds,” he said, stressing that staff competence and transparency are critical defenses against false narratives.
He reminded staff of their oath of loyalty and neutrality under Section 26 of the Electoral Act 2026, warning that partisan bias, negligence, or unethical conduct would not be tolerated.
“Our response will be proactive transparency, swift official communication, and uncompromising operational precision at every polling unit,” Amupitan stated.
