Cameroon Suspends Opposition Party

Cameroonian authorities have suspended the Cameroon National Salvation Front (FSNC), an opposition party led by exiled politician Issa Tchiroma Bakary, for three months over allegations of incitement and disturbing public order.

The suspension was announced on Tuesday by Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji, who said the party was sanctioned for actions linked to events before, during and after the October 2025 presidential election.

According to a government statement, the party was accused of “incitement to insurrection” and “serious disturbance of public order.” Authorities also warned that the FSNC could face legal action if it failed to comply with the suspension.

Bakary, a former government minister, emerged as a prominent opposition figure during the 2025 presidential election, which was won by long-serving President Paul Biya. Following the poll, Bakary declared himself the winner and repeatedly urged supporters to defend what he called his “victory.”

His claims sparked protests in several major cities, with security forces moving to suppress the demonstrations. The unrest reportedly resulted in multiple deaths, although the government has not released an official casualty figure.

Bakary subsequently left Cameroon and is currently living in exile in The Gambia. The suspension of the FSNC, which holds two seats in parliament, comes ahead of local and parliamentary elections scheduled for early 2027 after a series of postponements.
