Bashir Ahmad, former aide to late President Muhammadu Buhari, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s reported decision to cancel French President Emmanuel Macron’s planned visit to Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
In a post on X on Friday, Ahmad said Tinubu’s concern that Macron’s visit could spark allegations of foreign interference in Nigeria’s electoral process was justified.
“Mr Tinubu also reportedly expressed concern that Mr Macron’s visit, about three months before the Nigerian presidential election, could invite accusations of foreign influence. That’s a right step,” Ahmad wrote.
His remarks followed a Premium Times report that Macron had cancelled his state visit to Nigeria, initially scheduled for October 28, citing ongoing protests in France, Nigeria’s forthcoming election, and a new Ebola case.
According to sources, Macron and Tinubu agreed to cancel the trip to avoid misinterpretations, with Macron reportedly worried that travelling to Nigeria amid demonstrations in France could be seen as insensitive.
The cancellation comes just months before Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, in which Tinubu is seeking re-election.
