Authorities of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Edo State Command, have confirmed the escape of an awaiting-trial inmate, 28-year-old Osita Thomas, during a court appearance in Auchi.
In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Aminu Suleman, the incident occurred last week while Thomas was being tried for conspiracy and stealing.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service, Edo State Command, hereby notifies the general public of the escape of an awaiting-trial inmate of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Auchi,” the statement read.
The Service appealed for public cooperation, urging anyone with useful information to contact the nearest custodial centre or police station, or call the provided hotlines.
The Controller of Corrections assured that efforts were underway to recapture the fugitive and that security measures within custodial facilities had been reinforced.
However, an official explained that the warden escorting Thomas could not pursue him without risking the escape of other inmates, citing manpower shortages as a major challenge.
The official noted that over 1,000 personnel are due to retire this year, with no recruitment plans in place, warning that such gaps could lead to further incidents.
