Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade have launched a manhunt for the gunmen suspected of killing renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The military action follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu, who ordered security agencies to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the killing.
Sheikh Masussuka and his associate, Adamu Abubakar, were reportedly attacked on the evening of October 26, 2026, when two armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them outside the cleric’s residence.
The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting, leaving both victims with severe gunshot wounds. They were rushed to a hospital, where they were later confirmed dead.
Security sources said troops of the 17 Brigade are working alongside other security agencies to track down the assailants and bring them to justice.
Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Wase, visited Dutsin-Ma to deliver the condolences of the Chief of Army Staff to the family and followers of the late scholar.
During the visit, Wase urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and avoid taking actions that could hinder ongoing investigations.
Authorities have assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend those behind the attack and ensure they face justice.
