The Anglican Church of Nigeria has directed the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, to proceed on a six‑month leave, barring him from performing church duties while investigations into recent allegations unfold.
The directive was issued by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, in a letter dated October 15, 2026.
The letter stated that Ibezim must step aside immediately and refrain from officiating in any capacity within the Church of Nigeria, the Province of the Niger, or the Diocese of Awka during the period.
To ensure continuity, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, Bishop of Aguata Diocese, has been appointed Supervising Bishop of Awka Diocese and Coordinating Bishop of the Province of the Niger.
The Primate explained that the decision followed concerns raised by a visitation team and subsequent discussions with Ibezim on October 9.
He emphasized that the measure was not disciplinary but administrative, intended to allow for a fair and impartial investigation while fostering peace and reconciliation in the diocese.
Under Section 29(1) of Chapter V of the Church’s Constitution and Canons (2020), the Primate holds authority to take such action in safeguarding the integrity of the Church.
Ibezim has been instructed to hand over responsibilities to Ezeofor before commencing his leave.
Copies of the directive were circulated to key church officials, including the Chancellor, Registrar, Provincial Council, and Diocesan Board of Awka Diocese.
