2027: Peter Obi Stingy, Unfit for Presidency - Nyesom Wike

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has described former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi as stingy and unfit to lead Nigeria.

Speaking at a town hall meeting with Rainbow Coalition stakeholders in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday, Wike mocked Obi’s well-known practice of carrying his own bags.

“As a former governor, you cannot be stingy not to have employed a personal assistant who will carry your bag. You want to show you carry your bag. We don’t want such a stingy person as a president,” Wike said.

He labelled Obi the “president of social media,” arguing that online popularity does not equal the capacity to govern the country.

“Truly speaking, I gave him president of social media. If you were to vote who will be president of social media, I will vote for him. But if it is to govern Nigeria, it is capital no!”

Wike also questioned Obi’s record as Anambra governor, saying the performance of incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo should guide public judgment of Obi’s tenure.

He criticised politicians who leave parties during internal crises, contrasting this with his own decision to stay and fight within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“How will you solve the problem of the country? Did you see when there was a problem in PDP? Did I run? I defeated them,” he said.

The minister expressed doubts about the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

He declared support for President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

Wike further alleged mismanagement under a previous Rivers State administration, claiming $39 million was spent on a proposed 1,000-bed hospital that never reached foundation stage, about N60 billion on a monorail project of questionable value, and irregularities in a $308 million gas turbine sale.

He also questioned a past proposal to spend $10 million fumigating the state. He announced that the Rainbow Coalition would unveil its candidates on Tuesday, October 27, naming Kingsley Chinda as its preferred governorship candidate.

Some candidates would run under the APC despite the coalition’s cross-party membership. Wike praised the completion of the Bonny-Bodo Road under the Tinubu administration and urged residents to support experienced candidates.
