The founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr Boniface Aniebonam, has said the party will soon announce a frontline presidential candidate it intends to adopt for the 2027 general election.
Aniebonam made the disclosure in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja. He explained that prolonged litigation over the party’s leadership left it with insufficient time to properly process a presidential candidate capable of competing with those from other major parties.
“Indeed, INEC recognised the NNPP led by Dr Agbo Major as the National Chairman, but the time was short from the recognition to getting a candidate for the party,” he said.
“We had a placement holder while shopping for an authentic presidential candidate with character and capacity for the 2027 election.”
Aniebonam stressed that the NNPP remains firm on its manifesto and the standards required of any presidential aspirant. He noted that the party made a mistake with Rabiu Kwankwaso in 2023 and is determined not to repeat it.
“The NNPP is not desperate to rule Nigeria at all costs. We believe that God has the final say and that the Almighty decides who can lead a nation, hence our stance on politics not being a do-or-die affair,” he added.
The founder said party leaders nationwide would meet soon to finalise the adoption process and formally announce the chosen candidate to Nigerians.
He also indicated that members of the party, maritime practitioners, shippers and other stakeholders in the maritime and logistics sector would have a say in the selection.
