Goddie Akpama, chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Cross River, has rejected the “wrongful” inclusion of his name in the campaign council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
In a statement he co-signed with Cletus Amawu, the NDC
secretary in the state, Akpama described the listing as “misleading and
unacceptable”, insisting that he is not a member of the APC.
“Our attention has been drawn to an online publication on
the purported All Progressives Congress (APC) Cross River State Campaign
Council Directory, hosted on a website bearing the address apc2027 in which an
individual identified as ‘MR. GODDY AKPAMA’ is listed as a member under the
Chieftaincy Affairs category,” the statement reads.
“We wish to categorically correct the record and inform the
general public that Mr Goddie A. Akpama is not a member of the APC and has no
membership or affiliation with the party’s Cross River State Campaign Council.”
The NDC leaders said the directory also misspelt Akpama’s
name, adding that his correct name is Goddie Archibong Akpama.
They said the listing could mislead the public, confuse
political stakeholders and undermine Akpama’s political standing.
“The possibility that disgruntled individuals may be
exploiting the publication to embarrass or blackmail him politically cannot be
ignored,” the statement reads.
The NDC leaders challenged those responsible for compiling,
hosting or circulating the directory to explain how Akpama’s name was included.
They also demanded the immediate removal of the listing and
a public clarification to prevent further dissemination of what they described
as misleading information.
The statement said Akpama remains committed to his
responsibilities as the NDC chairman in Cross River, including efforts to
advance the party’s political objectives and bring Peter Obi into the political
equation through the NDC platform.
“Attempts to associate him with the APC through questionable
online publications will not alter his political identity or derail his
assignment,” the party stated.
The NDC leaders urged the public, political stakeholders,
journalists and party supporters to disregard the listing as evidence of
Akpama’s membership of the APC.
They added that political disagreements should be resolved
through legitimate engagement rather than the circulation of misleading claims
about another person’s political affiliation.
