2027: INEC Warns Against Vote Tampering, Threatens Offenders With Jail Term

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to politicians, party agents, and its officials against tampering with votes in the 2027 general elections, stressing that offenders risk imprisonment and fines.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, Plateau State, Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Samuel Egwu emphasized that political parties and candidates play a decisive role in ensuring credible polls.

He reminded stakeholders of their legal responsibilities, noting that the elections will be conducted in two phases: the Presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, followed by Governorship and State Assembly elections in February.

Egwu cautioned that any interference with the integrity of votes would attract legal sanctions. “If they tamper with the integrity of the vote, they will go to jail. It is the same with anyone else who would want to tamper with the integrity of votes,” he declared.

He also warned against excessive campaign spending, pointing out that while money is essential in elections, its misuse could undermine credibility.

The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Faniyan Ayodeji, represented by Deputy Commissioner Nengi Jephtha, echoed the call for compliance with electoral guidelines.

He stressed that proper information and adherence to rules were vital to preventing violence and conflict during the polls.

Both INEC and the police urged political parties to take stakeholder engagements seriously, assuring Nigerians of their commitment to credible and peaceful elections.
