Former members of Peter Obi’s 2023 Presidential Campaign Council have launched a new political platform, Batified Obidients, to campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
The group announced its formation in a statement signed on Thursday by its National Coordinator, Adesina Fagbenro-Byron, together with regional coordinators Bala Abubakar (North-West), Ekana Simeon Lamorde (North-East), Daniel Gambo (North-Central), Banwo Mayowa (South-West), Izunna Desmond (South-South) and Odira Alexander (South-East).
They said the decision followed months of reflection on their experiences during Obi’s 2023 campaign.
The group stated it would mobilise former Obi supporters, undecided voters and other Nigerians behind Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and work to increase the president’s 2023 vote total of 8,794,726, with particular focus on states where Obi performed strongly.
Explaining the shift, the group said its members concluded that Obi lacked certain leadership qualities they considered essential for governing Nigeria.
It cited observed weaknesses in diversity management, talent utilisation and internal conflict resolution during and after the campaign, and claimed some professionals who contributed expertise were not adequately recognised or deployed.
It also argued that the Labour Party was neither structurally nor ideologically prepared to govern the country.
The group stressed the assessment was not driven by personal animosity.Batified Obidients said it would operate through a national coordinator and secretariat (including secretary, financial secretary, publicity secretary and operations secretary), regional coordinators for the six geopolitical zones, and state point men across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The group emphasised that it does not claim to represent all Obi supporters. “We deliberately do not call ourselves the ‘Obidient Movement.’ That name is a proprietary political identity tied to Peter Obi and the Labour Party. We are Batified Obidients former Obidients who have crossed over to BAT and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement said.
It expressed confidence in Tinubu’s capability, experience and commitment, and said its mission is to secure his re-election, support a successful second term, and help deliver a Nigeria that works for all.
The group plans to explain the administration’s reforms to the public and build support for the Renewed Hope Agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.
