At least 10 soldiers and four civilians are feared dead after suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters launched a deadly assault on a military base in Mairari, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday about 130 kilometres north of Maiduguri, triggered hours of intense gunfire as troops battled the insurgents.
Security sources said several attackers were killed, but the militants inflicted heavy losses, destroying gun trucks and operational vehicles belonging to the military and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
Local officials confirmed the incident but withheld casualty figures. Communication delays meant news of the attack only emerged later, as the area lacks telecommunications coverage.
The assault underscores persistent insecurity in the Lake Chad region. In a separate incident, insurgents reportedly seized more than 40 locally made fishing boats from fishermen at Tumbun Barebari, also known as Abujan Ruwa.
Mairari holds strategic importance, having previously served as the temporary headquarters of Guzamala Council after insurgents captured Gudumbali, the official council seat.
The continued occupation of Gudumbali remains a major concern for local leaders.
Borno State House of Assembly Speaker, Abdulkarim Lawan, has repeatedly criticised security agencies for failing to reclaim Gudumbali, though his calls for stronger military action have yet to yield results.
As of press time, neither the military nor the Borno State Police Command had issued an official statement on the attack.
