Nigerians residing in South Africa have urged stronger action against Pretoria amid ongoing xenophobic violence targeting Nigerians and other African nationals.
Akaninyene Willie, President of the Akwa Ibom Indigenes Forum in South Africa, made the call in response to the Nigerian Federal Government’s decision to ban further official travel by its officials to the country.
Willie argued that Nigeria must intensify diplomatic pressure on South Africa. This should include demands for reparations of at least one billion rand for every Nigerian killed and for every Nigerian-owned business destroyed in the attacks.
Speaking by phone, he said the demand is necessary because South African authorities have failed to take adequate responsibility for the harm inflicted on Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
“We definitely want more pressure to be put on South Africa, considering the efforts Nigeria made towards their liberation. They have preferred to pay us back by killing and exhibiting hatred for us,” Willie said.
“If possible, we would like the International Criminal Court, ICC, to be approached since the African Union (AU) is not helping us in any way.”
He also called on the Federal Government and state governments to speed up the evacuation of stranded Nigerians from South Africa, noting that thousands remain waiting to be repatriated.
“South Africa should be charged one billion rand for every Nigerian citizen killed,” he insisted.
