Why I Rejected APC - Seriake Dickson

Senator Seriake Dickson, National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has explained why he chose not to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he does not want Nigeria to become a one-party state.

Dickson spoke in Abuja on Thursday while receiving notification of Leadership newspaper’s 2026 Politician of the Year award.

The former Bayelsa State governor said the decision came after what he described as the steady decline of his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Instead of defecting to the ruling APC, he opted to help form the NDC as a viable alternative platform to help preserve multiparty democracy.

“I did not believe Nigeria should become a one-party state,” Dickson stated. He noted that the NDC was established at a time when few expected a new political platform to gain significant traction.

According to him, the party has since developed into a strong opposition force.“Months down the line, we have built a formidable party and a major opposition platform in Nigeria,” he said.

Dickson expressed gratitude to Nigerians and to the leaders, members, and supporters of the NDC for their confidence in the project.
