Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to reinstate petroleum subsidy if elected in 2027, insisting that corruption must first be rooted out across all sectors.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Sokoto on Monday, Obi described corruption as Nigeria’s biggest challenge.
“People are talking about subsidy but what it is all about is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy,” he said.
Obi, who is running on a joint ticket with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, urged Nigerians to support the NDC, promising a politics of care and service. He outlined plans to prioritise education, improve security, and link all state capitals by rail to boost economic development.
Kwankwaso, addressing residents at the event, noted that banditry and kidnapping remain severe in the North-West and pledged that the NDC would confront these challenges.
He also revealed that the duo had met with the Sultan of Sokoto, who offered prayers and goodwill for their campaign.
Obi criticised the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity and economic hardship, arguing that Nigeria’s resources must be better managed to serve citizens.
“Education is our number one priority after unity and security,” he added.The NDC’s Sokoto governorship candidate, Dr. Shamsudeen Haido, and state chairman, Alhaji Bello Yabo, also assured residents of good governance and said the town hall meeting allowed citizens to hear directly from the party’s presidential team.
