Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after leading the country’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 on the directive of President Bola Tinubu to represent him at the annual gathering of world leaders.
According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, the Vice President delivered Tinubu’s national statement during the General Debate.
In the address, Nigeria renewed its demand for reform of the UN Security Council, calling for permanent African representation, fairer global financing, stronger climate support, and deeper multilateral cooperation.
Shettima also participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group.
There, the Nigerian government urged African nations to move beyond the export of raw minerals and instead prioritise local processing, manufacturing, and value addition.
At a high-level education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima reaffirmed the country’s commitment to education as a key investment in human capital, productivity, and long-term national prosperity.
Nigeria also backed the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign.The Vice President held meetings with members of the Nigerian diaspora, emphasising the importance of their investments, expertise, and networks in driving national development.
He also engaged the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission and held talks with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed.
Throughout the engagements, Shettima advanced Nigeria’s positions on development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace and security, while reiterating the Tinubu administration’s call for a more representative and equitable international order.
