The United States has refused to issue visas to several members of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s delegation, including his communications team, ahead of this week’s UN General Assembly in New York, Iranian state media reported Monday.
Pezeshkian, who is set to address the Assembly on Wednesday, will be the highest-ranking Iranian official to visit the US since the Middle East war began following US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February.
“In an unprecedented hostile move by the US government, President Donald Trump has denied visas to certain members of the president’s high-level delegation,” Iran’s IRNA news agency stated.
While the US has authorized the delegation’s travel, restrictions similar to last year remain in place, including bans on purchasing luxury goods.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has already departed for New York, stopping briefly in Qatar.Iran says it has conveyed conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil and gas shipping route it has blocked since the war began through Qatar as mediator.
In response, Washington has imposed a counterblockade on Iranian ports.The visa denial underscores the deepening tensions between Washington and Tehran as Pezeshkian prepares to deliver his UN address.
