The Obidient Movement, the political support group of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has demanded that President Bola Tinubu explain to Nigerians why he continues to avoid the United States.
In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Directorate, the group questioned Tinubu’s decision to remain in France on annual leave while world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York to advance their countries’ interests.
The group noted that the Presidency has cited annual leave and the need to focus on domestic priorities such as the economy and security.
It argued, however, that Nigerians are entitled to ask why Tinubu can embark on an extended European trip, visit France and attend a private dinner with Macron, yet cannot personally represent Nigeria at UNGA.
“His consistent absence over the last two years only suggests that Nigeria does not take such an opportunity seriously,” the statement said.
“This is not merely about attendance at a diplomatic event because the United Nations General Assembly provides Nigeria an important platform to present its interests before the international community, engage world leaders and participate directly in discussions on matters affecting Nigeria, Africa and the wider world.”
The Obidient Movement pointed out that Macron, whose country is hosting Tinubu’s vacation, is currently in New York attending UNGA and working to secure deals for France.
It described this as the conduct expected of any responsible president.The group listed specific questions it wants answered: why Tinubu skipped UNGA; whether he fears arrest if he sets foot in the United States; and why he readily attends even minor events in France while avoiding major engagements in the US.
“Tinubu must therefore explain his absence from the United States, clarify his official engagements, and provide Nigerians with the facts surrounding the decisions that have kept him away from the United Nations General Assembly for three consecutive years,” the statement added.“
At a time when Nigeria is preparing for another general election, transparency from those entrusted with the highest offices of the country is not optional. Nigerians deserve answers,” the Obidient Movement insisted.
