United States President Donald Trump is set to host Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the White House on Thursday in a day of grand ceremony aimed at preserving fragile ties between the two superpowers.
Trump personally greeted Xi upon his arrival at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, the first time in more than six decades that a US president has welcomed a foreign leader at the military base near Washington.
Thursday’s program includes a formal welcome on the South Lawn, a military flyover, Oval Office talks, and a state banquet.
The spectacle underscores Trump’s effort to showcase his “great relationship” with Xi, even as tensions simmer over trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, and Beijing’s support for Iran.
Xi, in remarks reported by Chinese state media, called for cooperation, saying China and the US should be “partners rather than rivals.” He expressed hope for “in-depth exchanges” with Trump on bilateral and global issues.
Trade Truce ExtensionUS Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a two-month extension of the trade truce between Washington and Beijing, averting a return to the tariff war that rattled global markets last year.
While both sides welcomed the move, analysts expect few breakthroughs from this summit, which is largely seen as a symbolic gesture to maintain détente.
Ceremony and SymbolismThe visit marks Xi’s first White House state visit in more than a decade.
The itinerary includes a military inspection in the Rose Garden, a gift exchange between First Lady Melania Trump and Xi’s wife Peng Liyuan, and a state dinner attended by top US tech and AI executives.
Trump confirmed that Iran and artificial intelligence would be on the agenda, alongside Taiwan, a sensitive issue closely watched for signs of shifting US policy.
The visit will conclude Friday with tea at the White House and a tour of the National Archives, home to the US Declaration of Independence.
