Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled multiple terrorist attacks in Borno State, killing fighters and recovering weapons and military equipment.
According to Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, the operations on September 17 foiled assaults on Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area, and Mairari, Guzamala Local Government Area.
Goni said troops, supported by Multinational Joint Task Force intelligence and surveillance assets, detected terrorists advancing towards FOB Gajiram and immediately adopted defensive measures. Close air support from the Air Component forced the attackers to withdraw.
Later that night, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters launched an attack on FOB Mairari but met stiff resistance. The military reported casualties among the terrorists, with four corpses, AK-47 rifles, ammunition, RPG bombs, and a camcorder recovered. Some soldiers sustained injuries but were promptly evacuated for treatment.
Following the engagements, Sector 3 Commander conducted a post-operation assessment, reinforcing the bases and directing continued patrols to prevent regrouping.
Meanwhile, sustained pressure across the theatre has led to fresh surrenders. Two Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) fighters, including a commander, surrendered to troops in Bama Local Government Area on September 16. They handed over rifles, magazines, ammunition, and a motorcycle.
The Theatre Commander, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, commended the troops and aircrew for their vigilance and urged remaining fighters to surrender. He also called on communities to continue providing credible intelligence to security forces.
The surrendered terrorists are currently in custody for investigation and profiling, as the military maintains pressure to secure communities across the North-East.
