President Bola Tinubu hosted billionaire businessman Femi Otedola for a private dinner in Paris on Monday as the Nigerian leader continues his extended stay in Europe.
Otedola disclosed the meeting in a post on his X account on Tuesday, sharing a photograph of the two men smiling side by side.
He expressed strong support for Tinubu’s economic policies and highlighted what he described as positive outcomes from the administration’s reforms.
“At a private dinner in Paris yesterday evening with His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose bold and forward-thinking reforms have put our economy firmly on a path of sustainable growth,” Otedola wrote.
He pointed to the inclusion of top Nigerian companies on the FTSE Russell Frontier 50 Index, record performance on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), increased foreign direct investment, and renewed economic confidence. Otedola also cited a “unified and more stable foreign exchange market” and foreign reserves standing at about $55 billion.
“I remain proud of you, Mr. President!” he added.The dinner comes amid ongoing public and political scrutiny of Tinubu’s prolonged absence from Nigeria.
The president left the country on August 30 for what the Presidency described as a three-week working vacation, beginning in London before moving to Paris. While in France, he has held meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré.
The Presidency initially extended the trip by a few days and later confirmed Tinubu would return on Tuesday, September 29, arriving in Lagos ahead of Independence Day events on October 1.
Critics, including a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party and the African Democratic Congress, have questioned the length of the stay and Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria and delivered the country’s national statement.
The Presidency has maintained that the president’s absence does not diminish Nigeria’s diplomatic standing.
