Suspected terrorists on Thursday attacked the convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, along the Kareto-Damasak Road in the northern part of the state.
The incident occurred around 2:30pm as Gubio and members of his team travelled to Damasak on an appreciation tour of northern Borno following his emergence as the party’s consensus candidate.
Confirming the attack on Friday, the spokesman for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said no member of the entourage was killed.
He stated that the attack was successfully repelled by combined security forces.
“Yesterday (Thursday) around 2:30pm, the convoy of the APC gubernatorial candidate was attacked along Kareto by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists. No lives were lost. But we believe that the terrorists may have escaped with a gunshot injury,” Daso said.
He added that the convoy continued its journey after the incident.In a separate statement, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said police tactical operatives counter-engaged the attackers who used an improvised explosive device (IED) and rocket-propelled grenades.
“Police tactical operatives successfully counter-engaged suspected terrorists who attacked a convoy along the Kareto–Damasak Road with an IED and rocket-propelled grenades.
The tactical team forced the terrorists to retreat into the surrounding bush and subsequently scanned and cleared the immediate axis to neutralise secondary explosive threats,” Hundeyin said.
He confirmed that the convoy was safely evacuated with no casualties among the entourage.
Sources within the convoy described the attack as brief but potentially deadly without the swift intervention of security personnel.
One anonymous source said the insurgents were overpowered, after which police scanned and cleared the area before the group proceeded to its destination.
