The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Wednesday dismissed an appeal by Shehu Gabam challenging a Court of Appeal ruling that upheld the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) under Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Gombe.
A five-member panel led by Justice Adamu Jauro, and including Justices Haruna Tsammani, A.A. Adumein, Jonah Adah and Joseph Oyewole, held that the appeal had become irrelevant and struck it out.
SDP presidential candidate and counsel Prince Adewole Adebayo described the decision as the definitive end to the party’s leadership crisis. He said the justices found “no life in the case,” noting that Gabam had already been expelled from the party and had not challenged his removal.
The original suit seeking recognition of Gabam’s leadership was filed by another party member.
“That is the end of Shehu Gabam. There is nothing about the SDP leadership crisis coming up again,” Adebayo said after the judgment.
SDP National Chairman Prof. Sadiq Gombe welcomed the ruling as a victory for both the party and democracy, stressing that the party’s court appearances have consistently been in defence of democratic principles rather than narrow organisational interests.
The Court of Appeal had in August set aside a Federal High Court judgment (Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/402/2026) that recognised Gabam’s leadership, declaring it null and void. The Supreme Court’s decision on Wednesday brings that prolonged legal battle to a close.
Adebayo also noted that two other SDP suits against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the 2027 election timetable remain pending at the Supreme Court.
