The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Muhammad Bello Goronyo, has resigned from the party and immediately taken up a new role as Director-General of the 2027 governorship campaign organisation of African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Manir Dan’Iya.
Goronyo announced his resignation in a letter dated August 30, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Goronyo Ward, Goronyo Local Government Area. He stated that his decision, effective August 31, was “purely personal.”
“I hereby formally notify you of my intention to resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)… effective from today, 31st August, 2026. The reason for my resignation is purely personal,” the letter read.
He thanked PDP leaders and members for the opportunity to serve, requesting that his name be removed from the party’s membership register.
Goronyo, who led the PDP during the last governorship election in which the party narrowly lost to the APC, had faced challenges amid the party’s national leadership crisis. His executive committee boycotted both the Ibadan and Abuja national conventions in a bid to remain neutral.
Barely hours after his resignation, the ADC campaign organisation announced his appointment as Director-General of Dan’Iya’s campaign. Dan’Iya hailed the choice as “strategic,” citing Goronyo’s experience as a civil servant, politician, and former commissioner under ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal.
Dan’Iya expressed confidence that Goronyo would strengthen grassroots mobilisation, unite party structures, and effectively communicate the ADC’s programmes across Sokoto’s 23 local government areas. He outlined campaign priorities including security, education, healthcare, agriculture, employment, civil service reform, infrastructure, and economic empowerment.
Goronyo’s defection and appointment highlight the intensifying political realignments in Sokoto State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
