Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has met with Costa Rican diplomat Rebeca Grynspan, who is seeking to become the next United Nations Secretary-General.
The meeting, held shortly before Shettima’s return to Nigeria, was disclosed in a post on his official X page.
He said Nigeria’s support for any candidate would be guided by principles of equity, justice, and fairness.
Shettima added that Nigeria would back a candidate committed to advancing Africa’s interests globally, including stronger representation in international institutions and improved multilateral cooperation.
He noted that Grynspan’s candidature would be considered in light of Nigeria’s ties with Latin America and the importance of gender inclusion.
“Thank you for seeking Nigeria’s perspective for your candidature for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. Nigeria and Costa Rica share a common historical background connecting both countries and their regions,” Shettima wrote.
