The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has called on authorities to uphold the rule of law in the ongoing detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
In a statement issued Monday, the council’s Secretary-General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, expressed concern over the circumstances of El-Rufai’s detention and the reported difficulties surrounding his bail conditions.
He stressed that every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, is entitled to constitutional protections, including fair hearing and lawful detention.
“The Council does not, under any circumstances, support or condone criminality in any form by anyone. However, the pursuit of justice must itself be just,” the statement read.
The SCSN warned that arbitrary or politically motivated actions could erode public trust in government institutions and weaken democratic governance.
It urged officials to ensure that all proceedings against El-Rufai comply fully with constitutional provisions and avoid perceptions of political persecution.
El-Rufai is currently facing multiple legal cases, including a nine-count amended charge by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) involving alleged abuse of office, fraud, money laundering, and irregular contract awards.
He also faces a separate five-count charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged unlawful recordings linked to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
The former governor has denied wrongdoing, while his bail conditions remain a contentious issue in the unfolding legal battle.
