The Senate on Tuesday resumed plenary with a call for urgent action on flooding, the rising cost of living and insecurity facing Nigerians.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the demand as the upper chamber returned from its annual recess, which began on July 23, 2026.
He said the Senate would deploy legislation, appropriation and oversight to tackle these challenges.
Akpabio stressed that the suspension of plenary had not halted the difficulties confronting the country.
“We adjourned since the 23rd day of July, 2026. The sittings of the Senate ceased in plenary for a season, but the life of Nigeria did not cease,” he said.
“Our victories should be measured in safer communities, better livelihoods for all Nigerians, and a stronger country for those we serve and for generations unborn.”
While focusing particular attention on the rescue of kidnapped Nigerians and the protection of vulnerable communities, Akpabio underscored that the Senate could not ignore the broader hardships, including flooding and the cost-of-living crisis.
He urged the Federal Government and relevant agencies to intensify efforts and said the chamber would scrutinise existing measures while considering additional legislative, budgetary and oversight interventions.
