Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has urged Nigerians to move beyond constant condemnation of the country and instead focus on providing practical solutions to its problems.
He stressed that every citizen ultimately bears the cost of how Nigeria is viewed internationally.
RMD made the remarks on Tuesday at the inaugural Pivot Nigeria conference, a thought-leadership event themed “The Reputation Dividend: Who Pays for Nigeria’s Perception?” held at the MUSON Centre in Lagos.
“We are too quick to condemn us. There are problems but we need to fix them. Don’t stand and just criticise and then proffer no solution,” he said.
While acknowledging the need for citizens to demand better governance, RMD emphasised that individual behaviour also shapes the nation’s global image.
He noted that Nigerians do not hold leaders accountable enough, adding that greater accountability would make officials more aware of their responsibility to the people they represent.
“Just remember who you are. You are an ambassador, not just for yourself, your parents or your school, but ultimately for your country,” he told the audience.
RMD highlighted the international success of Nollywood, Afrobeats, and entrepreneurs such as Aliko Dangote as evidence that Nigerians are already building positive reputation capital from within.
He cautioned, however, against expecting overnight change, describing the country as a work in progress that requires continued effort.
Also speaking at the event, conference convener Victoria Uwadoka, Lead Consultant at HighStakes PR Professionals, described reputation as a critical national asset.
She said the media, individuals, institutions, corporate Nigeria, and the government all share responsibility for shaping it.
“Tell the truth about where we are. Be balanced. There’s not only bad about us, but there’s also good as well. However, the government must create an enabling environment through sound policies, infrastructure and strong institutions,” she said.
The conference brought together figures from the creative, media, and communications sectors to discuss how Nigeria’s reputation influences its citizens, businesses, and opportunities.
