Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, has strongly criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for repeatedly addressing the President simply as “Bola.”
Dare issued the statement on Saturday in response to Atiku’s comments at a press conference in Abuja the previous day.
During the briefing, Atiku urged the President to implement a government intervention to lower petrol prices, arguing that Tinubu should not hesitate simply because the idea originated with him.
“Bola Tinubu should not be ashamed to do what is necessary to lower the price of petrol simply because Atiku Abubakar proposed a government intervention. He should just take the idea, rename it if he wishes, and even take the credit. What matters to me is that Nigerians pay less,” Atiku said.
Dare described the use of the President’s first name, combined with what he called instructions on how government should function, as deeply disrespectful. He labelled it “the height of insolence” and a sign of “unbridled desperation,” adding that lecturing a sitting president in that manner amounted to political hubris.
He further dismissed Atiku’s economic advice, calling the former Vice-President a “political wanderer” whose long pursuit of the presidency had been marked by opportunism. Dare defended the Tinubu administration’s reforms as necessary foundational work to fix an economy long burdened by structural problems and subsidy costs.
He characterised Atiku’s sudden call for intervention on fuel prices as a calculated attempt to exploit current hardships for electoral gain ahead of 2027.
The criticism follows similar remarks by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, who also called Atiku’s reference to the President as “Bola” disrespectful and discourteous to the office.
Atiku is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, while Tinubu is expected to seek re-election on the All Progressives Congress platform.
