The Lagos State Police Command has ordered officers accused of assaulting Olugbenga Adeleke to appear before the Commissioner of Police after a viral video surfaced in which he detailed his alleged ordeal.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed on Friday that the Divisional Police Officer of Ebenezer Police Station, Alagbado/Ojokoro, has been directed to produce the implicated officers on Monday, September 14, 2026.
Adeleke, a resident of Akera Tide community, petitioned Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu and human rights groups, alleging that policemen attached to the station assaulted, unlawfully detained, and extorted him.
He claimed he was stopped on September 6, 2026 by men not in uniform, struck in the face, and dragged into a bus before being taken to the station.
In his account, he was beaten again, detained overnight without explanation, and later told to pay money for bail despite no offence being stated.
Adeleke said he sustained a serious eye injury and demanded a full investigation.“Why did I have to suffer this injury without being given a clear explanation of what I had done? I am calling on the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Police Command, the Inspector-General of Police, human rights organisations and other relevant authorities to urgently investigate this matter,” he said.
He also alleged that other detainees were subjected to extortion during his detention.Reacting, Adebisi said the command had opened an investigation after the video went viral.
“The Complaint Response Unit has reached out to the complainant, who has been invited but is yet to respond. Meanwhile, the DPO has been directed to bring the officers involved before the CP. Both parties are expected at the command on Monday for further investigation,” she stated.
The case has drawn public attention, with calls for accountability and transparency in handling allegations of police misconduct.
