45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) overturned on Thursday at Isimi in Epe, Lagos State, spilling fuel onto the road after an accident involving a stationary vehicle.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
No deaths or injuries occurred.According to preliminary findings, the tanker (registration T-18212LA) was trying to pass a Ford pickup van (KJA-13FJ) that had broken down and was stopped on the carriageway.
One of the tanker’s rear tyres slipped into a pit, causing it to tip over onto the van and spill its flammable contents.
The pickup was carrying animal feed.LASEMA received an emergency call at about 10:19 a.m. and quickly deployed its LRT Beta Whales Team from Epe.
Responders from LASEMA worked with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police Force.
Teams secured the area, controlled and diverted traffic, and closed the affected stretch of road temporarily.
Firefighters covered the tanker and surrounding area with chemical foam to reduce the risk of fire.
The remaining petrol was safely transferred to an empty tanker. Both vehicles were later towed away to Ketu Police Station, and the road was reopened to traffic.
Oke-Osanyintolu praised the coordinated response that prevented a more serious incident. He urged drivers of heavy-duty vehicles and tankers to keep their vehicles in good condition, follow traffic rules, and drive carefully on Lagos roads.
The public was advised to report emergencies on the toll-free lines 767 and 112.
